It’s possible that the new 2D God of War won’t be a PS5 exclusive (or the idea was considered).
Santa Monica continues to keep details under wraps about its projects, and many fans believe a God of War game is the developer’s next offering. However, another rumor is circulating about a 2D Metroidvania version of the series.
And according to an insider, he heard that discussions about making the new 2D God of War game a multiplatform release took place. Or, in other words, it wouldn’t be a PS5 exclusive. Could it be?

The new 2D God of War may be cross-platform.
Recently, NateTheHate, a highly trusted industry insider, commented on something unexpected regarding the development of God of War 2D. According to him, discussions about making the release multiplatform took place internally at Sony.
However, Nate made it clear: he only heard about it when the rumors started circulating last year and hasn’t heard any new information. As he himself says in the tweet, “I don’t know if this discussion has evolved into a concrete plan.”

Furthermore, Nate didn’t comment on whether the “cross-platform plan” would actually apply to all consoles, but the original tweet specifically mentioned the God of War 2D metroidvania for Switch 2 – so at least it would be something beyond the standard PS5 and PC.
According to older rumors, the 2D God of War game would be a Metroidvania and would not be in development by Santa Monica, but by a third-party studio – while Santa Monica produces something else that we don’t yet know about.

Now, we just have to wait and see. If it’s real and comes to fruition, it would be an expansion of Sony’s strategy of bringing exclusive games to other platforms, as we saw with Helldivers 2.
